I lived in Beijing a few years ago and over there wearing a mask is part of the daily routine. It is worn to protect against road dust and pollution. I was far from imagining at the time that I would be crafting homemade masks for a global pandemic.
I am very proud of handcrafting masks and thus participate in my own way in limiting the spread of this pandemic.

LET’S TALK ABOUT FABRIC TO MAKE MASK
Pourquoi le denim me direz-vous? Le denim c’est une matière au tissage serré, durable et résistante. La plupart du temps fais de coton c’est une matière qui respire bien et qui est facile d’entretien. Somme toute, c’est une matière qui coche oui à toutes les caractéristiques pour un masque de qualité. De plus, le fait que ce soit une matière recyclée assure que la matière ait été prélavée à plusieurs reprises et élimine tout problème relié au rétrécissement qui pourrait survenir avec une matière neuve. TO MAKE YOUR UPCYCLED DENIM MASK YOU WILL NEED:
- This Kinsu pattern:)
- Une paire de jeans propre à recycler ou des retailles de denim. Idéalement sélectionner un denim plus léger qu’épais et de préférence 100% coton.
- Jersey fabric for the lining. ( You can use a t-shirt that you don’t wear anymore)
- ¼ inch flat elastic (28.25 inches)
- Twill tape ¾ inch (23 inches)
- Scissors and fabric chalk
- Machine à coudre, équipée de préférence d’une aiguille à denim.
ABOUT THIS FACEMASK PATTERN
- PDF format downloadable pattern
- Letter format printing, black and white.
- This pattern has two pieces (A-B).
- The adult mask pattern comes in 3 sizes (S-M-L)
- The children mask pattern comes in two sizes (5-8 years old and 9-12 years old)
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
PATTERN PLACEMENT IF IT IS A SKINNY JEANS
If the pattern is too wide for the width of the jeans leg. Position the pattern with the warp across the width of the mask.
PATTERN PLACEMENT IF IT IS A LARGE OR WIDE LEG JEANS
If the width of the pants allows it, position the pattern following direction of the warp in the direction of the height of the mask.
TO MAKE A MASK YOU NEED TO CUT:
You need to cut:
X1 shell
X1 lining
X1 elastic
* Do not cut the twill tape in advance, fix it on the mask and then cut.
** If you use new lining fabric instead of a t-shirt, make sure to wash it before you cut to pre-shrink it and avoid further problem.
SEWING STEPS
Fold the lining, right side in, and sew both darts at ¼ inch from the edge. Fold the edges of the lining and top stitch at ¼ inch.
Fold the shell right side in and sew the darts at ¼ inch from the edge.
Insert the lining inside the shell and topstitch the top and bottom of the lining with the shell 1/8’’ from the edge.
Finish the sides of the mask making a binding with the twill tape. Top stitch at 1/8’’ from the edge of the twill tape.
Fix the twill tape inside the mask, at the top and bottom of the mask and sew at ¼ inch from the edge. Then, turn the twill tape and the seam allowance on the right side of the mask and stitch 1/8 inch from the edge.
Overlap the two ends of the elastic and secure them together. Fold the twill ribbon twice, fixing it over the elastic. Hide the end of the elastic under one of the loops so that the elastic stays in place only there. Repeat the operation and attach the elastic to the other three corners by making loops with the twill tape taking care not to sew the elastic so it can be adjustable.
