10 INSPIRING SEWING STUDIO | from our community

Ariane Brunet-Juteau – Editor

I learned to sew with my mother. I was 10. My sister and I chose the patterns and fabrics; my mother did the sewing. It was a tradition passed down from my grandmother, whom I never knew.

We spread the fabric across the living room floor, cut it right there, and helped my mother at every step. There was no dedicated sewing space but, on that fabric covered floor, my first creative sparks were born. Sparks that would one day make me a fashion designer, and later, a denim upcycler;)

My mother’s sewing machine became mine. The kitchen table became my creative space.

A studio is not just a place where you make things. It’s a place that transforms you, that makes you feel, reflect, and imagine. A space that creates experiences.

This space can be vast and bright. Sometimes chaotic and cluttered. And sometimes, it almost disappears, fragile under the weight of daily life.

At the start of this year, I wanted to shine a light on our creative spaces. Last week, I shared mine. (If you missed it, access the story here). This week, I’m sharing 10 sewing studios from our Facebook community

Toutes vos photos sont inspirantes : ce sont des invitations, des portes ouvertes sur vos laboratoires créatifs. Merci de partager votre univers!

Studio of Beth Swalwell

"I work with kids on the spectrum and teach art, mostly to kids. I have an art club and my fave, a sewing club which this photo shows I am set up for. I also do birthday parties and run art camps all summer. Best 'job' ever!”

– Beth

Studio of Lisa Un Thwanderers

" My sewing shed x”

– Lisa

Studio of  Amy Sparreboom

“How I organise my fabrics. All the denim is on the right shelving, with lightest to darkest as you move down through the suitcases. The suitcases on the left are coloured fabrics and projects yet to be done. In the process of painting more suitcases to make finding my colours easier. Such as greens in green etc”

– Amy

Studio of Doris Green

Studio of Debbie Ballard

“I'm a clean freak. I clean my room, which is upstairs, every time I'm done sewing for the day.”

– Debbie

Studio of Sala Menaya

"My basement is approximately 1600 sq ft and is comprised of three working areas. It's my happy place. I have been asked about the machines I use and my workspace where I create. So, I am sharing more pictures here. "

– Sala

Studio of Linda Statfford

“As a longtime seamstress and former owner of a production sewing company, I’m no stranger to fabric but denim is a whole new adventure for me. I’m diving headfirst into the world of denim upcycling and soaking up every bit of knowledge I can.”

– Linda

Studio of Iverna McAnulty

“Are you sure you want to see this? I live in a 1 bedroom apartment & I'm working on clearing out a storage unit, which inevitably overflows into the apartment as I sort it into keep (trying to be ruthless with myself); donate; & trash. There are (8?) projects & repairs sitting there”

– Iverna

What makes these studios special isn’t their size or setup, but the intention behind them. Whether it’s a full basement, a sewing shed, or even a Sewing tool chest (yes, that might be the tiniest studio I’ve ever worked from), these spaces become happy places because they hold our curiosity, our patience, and our desire to create.

We don’t wait for space to create, we create space by creating.

Warmly,

Ariane xo 💙
