Seam allowance is an essential sewing technique, defined as the margin of fabric between the seam and the fabric edge. You can have a seam allowance of 0.5 cm (0.25'') 1 cm (0.5''), 1.5 cm (0.75''), or 2 cm (1'').

If your seam allowance is less than 0.5 cm, the fabric risks fraying, and the seam may give way.

On the other hand, more than 2 cm can create unnecessary bulk inside the garment. The industry standard for seam allowance is 1 cm.

Avant de commencer à coudreBefore starting to sew, it’s crucial to check your sewing pattern for the width of the seam allowance. If the pattern specifies a 1 cm seam allowance and you sew at 0.5 cm, your garment will end up too small.

On all sewing machines, whether domestic or industrial, there are guide lines located right next to the presser foot. These guides may use metric measurements, imperial measurements, or both. By aligning the edge of your fabric with one of these lines and following it as you sew, you can achieve precise, straight stitches with the desired seam allowance.

Tips and Tricks for Straight Sewing:
When sewing, it’s tempting to keep your eyes on the needle. However, to sew a perfectly straight line, focus instead on the guide line and ensure the edge of your fabric stays aligned with it throughout the seam. This simple technique greatly improves the precision and consistency of your sewing.
If you want to sew with a 0.5 cm seam allowance, note that half the width of the presser foot corresponds to 0.5 cm. So, if you align the edge of your fabric with the edge of the foot, you’ll achieve a 0.5 cm seam allowance.

Seam allowance is essential for ensuring durable seams and professional results. By checking the width on your sewing pattern and using your machine’s guide lines, you’ll achieve satisfying results every time!
