The Presser Foot: Do You Forget to Lower It?

The presser foot on your sewing machine plays a key role: it holds the fabric in place while the needle goes up and down to stitch. Without it, the fabric slips, shifts, and it’s impossible to sew even a simple seam.

It’s called the “presser foot” because itpress the fabrics together.

Before Sewing: Always Lower the Presser Foot!

This is a golden rule in sewing: before you start, check that the presser foot is lowered

If you forget to lower it, several issues can arise:

  • A tangled thread mess underneath your seam : perfect opportunity to use your seam ripper! Lucky you!
  • The machine doesn’t sew properly : you might think it’s broken or that sewing isn’t for you.

But don’t worry—it’s not because you’re bad at sewing or your machine is defective! It’s often just a simple mistake. The next time you run into this problem, take a pause and check whether you’ve lowered the presser foot.

This type of error can be discouraging for beginners, but with practice, lowering the presser foot will become second nature.

The Different Types of Presser Feet

There are many types of presser feet, each designed for a specific task. Here are my top three essentials:

  • The standard foot : perfect for basic stitches and everyday sewing.
  • The zipper foot : ideal for inserting zippers.
  • The Teflon foot : a must-have for sewing tricky materials like leather or vinyl.

There are many other types, but if you’re just starting out, you don’t need to know them all right now!

Honestly, you can complete most projects with just the standard foot. It’s just that the experience might not be as smooth as it would be if you used the correct foot for the task.

How to Change the Presser Foot

Don’t worry—changing the presser foot is super easy!

  • On modern domestic machines : they come with a quick-release system. Raise the presser foot, press the clip to release it, place the new foot under the shank, and lower the shank to secure it.
  • On industrial machines : the process is slightly different. You’ll need to unscrew and re-screw a small screw to swap the foot.

👉 A tip: always keep your machine’s manual handy to make sure you’re doing it correctly.
